Sport HIV Committee

Following on from the first ever Oceania Workshop on HIV and AIDS Prevention through Sport hosted in PNG in 2007, the HIV Prevention through Sport Committee was established with membership from key stakeholders in the HIV and Sporting communities. Through funding from IOC, the National AIDS Council Secretariat and the Sports for Development Initiative, the committee has been able to develop a HIV and AIDS Sportsplace Policy, create and distribute a HIV and AIDS Toolkit for the sporting community and conduct the largest HIV survey of its kind during the 2009 PNG Games. It continues to promote and support sporting activities which mainstream HIV and the involvement of People Living with HIV and will work towards identifying and training sportspeople to be role models in the response to HIV in PNG. It is hoped that the work of the committee will see increased positive behavior towards HIV amongst sports people in PNG.
