PNGOC urges everyone to support Team PNG’s dream to Tokyo 2020 Olympic in July and buy a Trukai Fun

Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) urges all Papua New Guinean to show pride and patriotism and rally support behind Team PNG’s dream to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics scheduled for July 23rd- 8th August later this year and buy a Trukai Fun Run T-Shirt.

Initial sales of the Trukai Fun Run T-shirts which went live last week Friday 7th of May, with initial sales in Port Moresby and Lae saw nearly 100 t-Shirts being sold to individuals, while interested business houses and organisations also placed bulk orders.

PNGOC General Secretary Mrs Auvita Rapilla said that while the t-shirts sales started on a good note with a lot of interests from the public visiting the open-air sales stalls set-up, as well as purchases from designated retail shops City Pharmacy Limited and Vision City outlets and large orders from organisations, support from all Papua New Guineans was vital to at least buy a t-shirt as the country reels from the economic challenges posed by COVID-19.

Mrs Rapilla said that our national Team needs all the support, as this was the biggest fundraiser to raise funds for Team PNG to represent our country and attend and participate at affiliated global sporting event, such as the Olympics. She said that while the sale and auction of the Trukai Fun Run t-shirts was the precursor event to the prestigious nationwide organized ‘fun run’ event in PNG, COVID-19 restrictions since 2020 has limited movement and mass gatherings and consequently hindered the staging of the fun run event again this year. “There are a total of 65,000 Trukai Fun Run t-shirts to be sold and I urged everyone and all business houses to rally behind Team PNG and purchase a t-shirt”, Mrs Rapilla said. The Fun Run has been the major fundraiser for Team PNG since 1983, enabling the Team to participate in international sporting events such as the Commonwealth and Pacific Games, apart from the Olympics. PNGOC is hoping to send a handful of qualified athletes and sporting Olympic hopefuls to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in July, to attend the Games, which was deferred from 2020 mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PNGOC President John Dawanicura thanked Trukai Industries for its continued support as a major corporate partner since coming onboard 2 decades ago.” On behalf of the PNGOC Board and staff and Athletes and Sporting Teams that represent the country under Team PNG banner, I commend the tremendous effort and collaborations by the company and employees, as well as the other supporting corporate partners in uniting over the last 22 years to not only sell the t-shirts, but also other stakeholders and communities in the annual staging of the Fun Run events nationally under their popular brand Trukai”.
