New Clark City, Tarlac, Philippines – Team PNG wrapped up the Philippine Open Championships on Sunday with an impressive haul of one gold medal, five bronze medals, and a string of personal best performances from its 13 athletes.
The competition featured around 1,000 athletes competing over four days across Open and Under 18 divisions, with domestic clubs joined by eight international teams including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
Athletics PNG President Tony Green praised the event, saying, “It was a very good competition for the athletes.” He added that the level of competition provided valuable experience and motivation for both elite and developing athletes.
Daniel Baul led the medal tally for PNG, claiming gold in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.91 seconds. Teammate Sialis Passingan secured bronze in the same event with a personal best of 53.55 seconds, while William Peka finished fourth in 54.73 seconds—highlighting PNG's depth in the 400m hurdles.
Benjamin Aliel earned a bronze medal in the 400m with a time of 47.97 seconds. Rising star Patricia Kuku delivered standout performances, winning bronze in both the 200m and 400m with personal best times of 25.53 and 57.88 seconds respectively.
Distance runner Ray Kumala Heru also climbed the podium, securing bronze in the 3000m steeplechase with a personal best of 12:16.75.
Several other athletes achieved personal bests, including:
Robert Oa in the 110m hurdles
Abel Siune, Monica Kalua, and Ray Kumala Heru in the 1500m
Denlyne Kinbangi in the 200m
Dilu Goiye in the 10,000m
Senior athletes Dilu Goiye, Siune Kagl, Robert Oa, and Karo Iga also faced strong competition and gained valuable experience.
The Philippine Open Championships provided a challenging and competitive platform that pushed PNG athletes to new heights and personal bests, reinforcing the team’s growth and depth in athletics.
