PNGOC stages Successful 2022 Annual General Assembly

The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) successfully staged its Annual General Assembly on Saturday 4th June 2022 at the Gateway Hotel.

The General Assembly approved the 2021 Annual Report and Audited Financial Statements.

Secretary-General, Auvita Rapilla when delivering the Annual Report said 2021 was another challenging year for sports in the country.

“Unprecedented challenges in running our fundraising events, hosting our annual general assembly, and adapting to changing technological requirements amongst other things have forced us to become more collaborative and champion our values of honesty, excellence, respect and openness as we strive to be more innovative and work towards optimistic outcomes”.

“As an organisation, we have been inspired to work harder with the launching of our 2021-2024 Strategic Plan as we seek out the means to live out our goal to enable Papua New Guinea to achieve sporting excellence”, she added.

2021 was a milestone as the organisation marked 60 Years of its existence.

Rapilla also took the opportunity to acknowledge all the partners of the PNGOC, whom, without them, PNGOC would not have achieved its objectives in 2021, in particular with sending Team PNG to the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.

Holding the AGA and reporting on the results of 2021 is in line with the organisation’s constitutional duty and to uphold good governance practices and accountability for all funds raised and expended annually, Rapilla added.

Coinciding with the Annual General Assembly and to commemorate PNGOC’s 60th Anniversary (1961-2021) six (6) individuals were recognized for their contribution to PNGOC; the Sport and Olympic movement and were awarded the inaugural PNG Olympic Committee Order of Merit Award. They included: the late Sir Henry ToRobert (Posthumous), Sir Mick Nades, Mel Donald, Tamzin Wardley, Syd Yates and Sir John Dawanincura.

Elections of Senior Vice President, Female Vice President and Male Vice President also took place at the General Assembly. Tony Green was re-elected Senior Vice President unopposed while Iammo Launa retained her position as Female Vice President and Kinivanagi Karo was elected the new Male Vice President. All three will serve a term of four (4) years up to 2026. The elections were scrutinised by Transparency International and PNG Sport Foundation representatives.

PNGOC President Sir John Dawanincura congratulated the new Male Vice President, Kini Karo for being the newly elected Executive to the PNGOC Executive Board while commending Launa and Green for maintaining their positions. Sir John also took time to thank outgoing Executive Kila Dick for his services to the PNGOC and Team PNG.

The General Assembly was attended by National Federations, Sponsors and Partners of the PNG Olympic Committee.
